About Us

The Merced River Chapter, NSDAR, is named for the river which originates in the Yosemite Valley, California. Organizing Regent Virginia Chase and nineteen members formed this chapter on October 9, 1990. It is one of California’s seven centennial chapters, all organized during the National Society’s 100th anniversary, which earned a first-place national award for the state. On April 18, 1997, after thirty years of service to the nation, the Mariposa Chapter, NSDAR, merged with the Merced River Chapter, NSDAR. Mariposa means “butterfly” in its native Spanish, and somehow it seemed most fitting to have a lovely butterfly alongside a mighty river.
