California State Society

Josefa Higuera Livermore Chapter, NSDAR

Livermore, California

Welcome

The Josefa Higuera Livermore Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR or DAR), was organized on April 15, 2000, by the Organizing Regent, together with 15 other DAR members. Today, the chapter has almost 100 members of diverse backgrounds and interests, with our common bond being our lineal descent from American Revolutionary War Patriots. Most members are from the Livermore Valley area, but local residency is not a requirement of membership in any chapter.

Our chapter took its name from Josefa Higuera Livermore, the wife of Robert Livermore, for whom the town and valley were named. Numerous descendants of this couple still live in the area. Livermore is the easternmost city in the San Francisco Bay Area and the gateway to the Central Valley — its 22 square miles are part of California’s oldest wine region, with some 40 wineries.

The Josefa Higuera Livermore Chapter, NSDAR, has been active in the Livermore community over its 20-year history through its support for veterans, education, local heritage, and the environment. The chapter also supports the causes of the state and national societies.

About Us

The first official meeting of the Josefa Higuera Livermore Chapter, NSDAR, was held on April 15, 2000, at a member’s home. There were 16 members, the Organizing Regent, and 15 other at-large DAR members. Our chapter grew significantly during the first year, adding 37 new members — these 53 ladies became the charter members of the chapter. The official charter, signed by President General Linda Watkins on June 29, 2003, lists the officers of the chapter as well as the 53 charter members. Several of these charter members have served as chapter regents.

The chapter Organizing Committee chose Josefa Higuera Livermore as the name of our chapter for several reasons. Because the DAR is a woman’s organization, the committee felt strongly that the chapter should be named after a woman. Secondly, Josefa Higuera was married to Robert Livermore, for whom the valley and the town of Livermore, where the chapter was organized, were named.

Over the years our chapter continued to grow to about 140 members. The ladies of this chapter range in age from the 20s through the 80s and possibly beyond. We have varied backgrounds and many different interests, but our Daughters share the common bond of friendship, of love for our country, and of being a direct descendant of an American Revolutionary War Patriot.

We meet monthly from January through May and September through December. In general, our meetings start with a program covering topics related to the mission of the NSDAR — historical preservation, education, and patriotism — followed by a social break, and concluded with our chapter business. We also meet on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month, January through May and September through December, for breakfast at a local restaurant in Livermore.

Our chapter has also supported state and national causes, such as the State Regent’s projects, reforestation in California, the DAR schools and student projects, and the DAR Museum. Our main fundraising events are the popular May and December luncheons, where members contribute beautifully themed baskets raffled off in a silent auction called the Ritzy Raffle.
