About Us
“El Marinero” was the affectionate name given by early Spanish settlers to an Indian chief of the Coastal Miwoks who lived in this area when the Spaniards arrived. The chief often served as a boatman, ferrying small craft over San Francisco Bay. Thus, the friars nicknamed him El Marinero, or “the Sailor.” As the namesake of our chapter, members commissioned a plaque in his honor.
