California State Society

Don Jose Verdugo Chapter, NSDAR

La Cañada Flintridge, California

Welcome

The Don José Verdugo Chapter, of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, NSDAR or DAR, is nestled in the foothills above Los Angeles, California. The chapter was organized in La Cañada on March 27, 1953, by Mrs. Guy Warren Hull, the chapter’s first regent. The chapter’s name was chosen for its proximity to the land grant of patriot Don José Verdugo. Most members live in the Crescenta Valley, however local residency is not a requirement for any chapter. Our membership predominantly resides in the foothill communities of La Cañada Flintridge, La Crescenta, Montrose, Sunland, Tujunga, Glendale, Burbank, and Altadena.

The Daughters of the American Revolution is a nonprofit, nonpolitical women’s volunteer service organization dedicated to promoting historic preservation, education, and patriotism. We are an active and dedicated group of women from all walks of life — from professionals to business owners, from young women to grandmothers — giving back to our communities through service and making lifelong friendships along the way.

We welcome any woman for membership who is 18 years of age or older and who is descended from a man or woman who aided in achieving American independence during the period between April 19, 1775, and November 26, 1783. The Don José Verdugo Chapter, NSDAR, meets the first Friday of the month, February through June and October through December. If you would like to attend one of our meetings, please contact us.

Our Name

An image of Don José Maria Verdugo comes in part from a mural depicting rancho life in early Glendale. The mural was on the Fidelity Federal Bank building on Broadway in Glendale, California, in the 1970s. Norman C. Hayhurst worked for Fidelity Federal Bank, and his wife Margaret saved an image of the complete mural before it was destroyed.
